I met Emma and Zak at the Wedding of Kaleb and Gemma, which I photographed last year. Zak was Kaleb’s best man., and I distinctly remember him turning into a statue the very second I pointed my camera in his direction… How things can change!
When Emma told me about the plans she had for her and Zak’s big day, I knew I wanted to be involved. A Summer Solstice wedding, a handfasting, 50s dresses, The Edwardian Marquee, and there were still so many other awesome highlights!
I like to take my wedding couples out on a pre-wedding or engagement shoot, it gives them a good chance to get to know me and it’s great for practising and perfecting posing for the actual wedding day. Plus, it’s really good fun! On the wedding day there usually isn’t as much time as you would like so on an engagement shoot you can goof around and relax a lot more. So we decided, if you’re having a Summer Solstice Wedding, then surely you must have a Winter Solstice theme engagement shoot! So that’s what we did, and of course Emma had lots of wonderful props to use.
Emma and Zak were both sweet enough to organise presents in photographic form to give to each other on the day of the wedding. (Completely off their own initiative, with absolutely no encouragement from me whatsoever!) This meant that we were emailing back and forth loads before the date and it was nice to get to know them both- as you can see from the pictures- they are an awesome couple!
On the day of the wedding, everything was a photographers dream! The boldly coloured 50s dresses, Emma’s beautiful lace halter dress and bold accessories, cat photobombs, Zak and his groomsmen’s checked shirt, bow tie, braces and Sunflower buttonhole combos, the moustaches, brilliant sunshine, Emma walking down the aisle to her Father’s record, a poetic hand-fasting under dappled sunlight of a huge Sycamore tree, a Harry Potter Lego cake with matching Harry Potter theme cocktails and tables, huge light up letters on the dance floor, top secret present exchanging, a couple shoot during Golden Hour, it was just magical from beginning to end.
Thank you so much to Emma and Zak, couples like you are the reason I love wedding photography. I wish you an amazing future together.
Ash Darling xx
