Emma & Tim | Engaged

I was very lucky to visit Highdown Gardens with the lovely Emma and Tim in Worthing last weekend- it’s stunning! Everywhere I looked was just perfect. Emma and Tim are getting married in October, and after being guests at two of the weddings I’ve photographed, I can not wait for their turn! They are such fun to be around and loved spending time with them on this shoot, especially getting tea and cake after!

Neena & Steve | Engaged

Neena first got in contact last year, and I have to say her email had my favourite subject line ever.
(“Can you photograph our wedding, please?”) Why yes, I would love to!
Fast forward to earlier on in April and I had an absolutely lovely time hanging out with Neena and Steve in Stanmer Park!
Neena and Steve first met here for a friend’s “Sport’s Day themed” birthday party which sounded brilliant, so it seemed like a fitting location to do their pre-wedding photos. We had lots fun walking through the woods and posing in the greenhouse.

Here are some of the photos from the shoot, can’t wait for their wedding in June!

Sam, Tyler and baby Arwen | Relaxed Family Photography

I have been lucky to photograph Sam and Tyler on many occasions, one of my favourites was of course their wedding- of of the first weddings I ever photographed. Well, it’s almost 2 years since their wedding and since then the delightful Arwen has come along! Arwen is now 5 months old, and every bit as charismatic and fun as her parents! With a nephew of a similar age, it’s safe to say I’ve gone a bit broody  baby mad lately.
It’s going to be amazing watching Arwen grow up, and I am incredibly privileged to be around to document it. We wanted to do some relaxed photos of just the three of them together, nothing too posed or cheesy, here are the results.

Emma & Zak | Married

I met Emma and Zak at the Wedding of Kaleb and Gemma, which I photographed last year. Zak was Kaleb’s best man., and I distinctly remember him turning into a statue the very second I pointed my camera in his direction… How things can change!

When Emma told me about the plans she had for her and Zak’s big day, I knew I wanted to be involved. A Summer Solstice wedding, a handfasting, 50s dresses, The Edwardian Marquee, and there were still so many other awesome highlights!

I like to take my wedding couples out on a pre-wedding or engagement shoot, it gives them a good chance to get to know me and it’s great for practising and perfecting posing for the actual wedding day. Plus, it’s really good fun! On the wedding day there usually isn’t as much time as you would like so on an engagement shoot you can goof around and relax a lot more. So we decided,  if you’re having a Summer Solstice Wedding, then surely you must have a Winter Solstice theme engagement shoot! So that’s what we did, and of course Emma had lots of wonderful props to use.

Emma and Zak were both sweet enough to organise presents in photographic form to give to each other on the day of the wedding. (Completely off their own initiative, with absolutely no encouragement from me whatsoever!)  This meant that we were emailing back and forth loads before the date and it was nice to get to know them both- as you can see from the pictures- they are an awesome couple!

On the day of the wedding, everything was a photographers dream! The boldly coloured 50s dresses, Emma’s beautiful lace halter dress and bold accessories, cat photobombs, Zak and his groomsmen’s checked shirt, bow tie, braces and Sunflower buttonhole combos, the moustaches, brilliant sunshine, Emma walking down the aisle to her Father’s record, a poetic hand-fasting under dappled sunlight of a huge Sycamore tree, a Harry Potter Lego cake with matching Harry Potter theme cocktails and tables, huge light up letters on the dance floor, top secret present exchanging, a couple shoot during Golden Hour, it was just magical from beginning to end.

Thank you so much to Emma and Zak, couples like you are the reason I love wedding photography. I wish you an amazing future together.

Daniel’s groom preparations…

Back in May, my darling cousin Daniel tied the knot with his beautiful wife Kelly! This time around, I got to be a guest! But not without taking a few snaps in the morning of Daniel getting ready whilst their main photographer was with the bride and her bridesmaids. The difference between the groom getting ready and the bride getting ready always amazes me. Daniel was ready so fast you could blink and miss it, waistcoat, cravat, bit of hair wax, splash of aftershave, done! Heehee. I imagine this to be a totally difference experience to his bride, Kelly. It was lovely to have lots of time to get group shots and the boys all managed to sneak in a bottle of bubbly at Foxhills before heading off to The Victoria Chapel at St James’ boys school for the ceremony. After that, I retired my camera and let their main photographer get the shots- it was great to actually enjoy the day and have fun with relatives for once!

Belle’s Events Valentines Vintage Wedding Fair @ The Dome, Worthing

Over Valentines Weekend I was lucky to be one of the exhibitors at Belle’s Events Valentines Vintage Wedding Fair!

Ash Darling wedding photographer-29

Outside in the surprising bright February sunshine we had Sussex Love Bugs beautiful V Dubs letting everybody know we’re here!
Ash Darling wedding photographer-28

Here’s a cheeky pic of my stall all set up – I now have a huge white leather bound photo album for fair attendees to flick through too.

First up are the beautiful blooms on display from Sussex Cutting Garden

We were also fortunate to be serenaded by several performers… the first of which was Thoroughly Modern Millie with her beautiful voice matching her awesome style!

Ash Darling wedding photographer-15

Next to my stall we have the lads at Mr Bake… the smell of these was wafting over all day and tempting me and my lovely assistant for the day, Laura of Laurel Leaf events. After trying some samples, I’m glad to report that they taste as good as they smell! I also loved the chunky aesthetic of these cakes, a refreshing mix up from the usual delicate/floral wedding cake designs – one of my wedding couples for this year informed me that they will be having a Mr Bake cake for their wedding so I’m really looking forward to seeing what they get!

Ash Darling wedding photographer-32

It was super busy at the fair but I was lucky to escape upstairs to the beautiful collaboration of Katherine Gibbons‘ amazing flowers and Rosehip Sussex catering and styling *swoon* so much prettiness! The next six pictures are dedicated solely to this eye candy.

Kimberly & Lucy | Engaged

For Kimberly and Lucy’s engagement shoot, we decided to visit the location of their engagement – St Ann’s Hill in Chertsey.  Being local to the area I had visited there many times before, as I am sure Kimberly and Lucy have over the years. St Ann’s Hill has a beautiful nature trail and is probably most popular for the beautiful views over Surrey. It made for a gorgeous late Summer backdrop and both Kimberly and Lucy- who confessed to be not comfortable in front of the camera were really relaxed and we managed to have a lot of fun  on this shoot! A couple of the photos from this shoot ended up being used at Kimberly and Lucy’s November wedding- on their personalised rock favours and also as a huge signing board! Looking forward to blogging their wedding soon!

Su Su & Matt | Married

Su Su and Matt were married at the lovely Brown’s in Covent Garden on the 5th September 2014. The whole day certainly had a cool, London vibe with lots of stunning, unique and personal Burmese touches.
It began as a relatively calm morning at Su Su and Matt’s East London flat, with Su Su and her bridesmaids getting hair and make up done before getting in taxis and heading to their amazing wedding venue, the Court Rooms at Brown’s.

The ceremony was relaxed and the backdrop of the old court room was a wonderful setting! The whole day was filled with personalised efforts from family and friends, especially with little nods to Su Su’s heritage, which became all the more meaningful as Su Su’s parents were sadly, unable to attend. Su Su’s entrance music was Burmese traditional walk music played and sang by a family friend, and Su Su and Matt signed the register to the amazing sounds of the Burmese harp played by another family friend.
Shortly after the ceremony there was time for group photos and Matt, Su Su and her bridesmaids travelled by rickshaw to to nearby location of the beautiful Whitehall Gardens for more photos. This little excursion proved to be lots of fun! By the time we returned it was almost time for the wedding breakfast followed by speeches and cake cutting. The court room looked wonderful, with a huge wire elephant candle centrepiece adorning the head table made by a family friend, and the tables were named after Studio Ghibli characters!!

The evening entertainment was provided by Su Su’s lovely bridesmaid Lwin, who performed a Burmese traditional dance- the perfect warm up for Su Su and Matt’s first dance- a swing dance which they had practised and learnt especially.  Su Su had also changed from her stunning Burmese dress to a vintage cream beaded dress.

I absolutely love the detail and thought that went into Matt and Su Su’s wedding, they were lots of fun to work with and full of ideas- thank you Su Su and Matt, I wish you every happiness for your married life!

Ash Darling xx

A few details…
Su Su’s hair and make up were by the lovely Lauren Slee of Return to Glory
Brides dress: Burmese traditional bridal dress – Designer Tin Maung Khine (from Mandalay, Burma)
Reception dress: Designer Ceil Chapman (circa 1950-1960) from Elizabeth Avey
Brides headpiece: Vintage broach from Fur Coat No Knickers
Brides shoes: Rachel Simpson
Flowers: Everything Rosy Ltd
Wedding Venue: Browns, Covent Garden
Matt’s suit: Moss Bros
Wedding favours: Fudge from Yum Yum Tree
The Asian Elephant family Candles frame centrepiece was by Ben Baker Art – a childhood friend of Matt’s.
